Spring home inspection and maintenance

Many of us take pride in our home, but during the winter months, our home can take a beating. Long winters in the northern states can be harsh on the exterior of the home and the weather makes it difficult for us to continue to take care of projects as they become available. So it’s a good idea to set aside a weekend or two in the spring to make sure your home is up to date. Here are some tips that can help you in this type of maintenance work so that you can enjoy the summer in a well-kept home.

One of the first things to check in spring is the gutters in the house. If you live in an area that has ice or snow, this can easily impact gutters and cause them to leak. If the gutters are not drained properly, this can end up dragging water into the house under the roof or even through the walls into the living space. Make sure gutters are free of debris and well maintained in the spring. You also need to make sure that any area where they drain outside the house is clutter free so that water can escape from the foundation.

You may also have to garden in the spring. Many of us tend to enjoy doing this work on our own, but for larger projects, you may want to consider hiring a few landscapers. They can help you control the situation so that you can take care of maintenance work much more easily. One thing to watch out for in particular is low-lying areas that can lead to flooding during the summer. This is especially the case around the foundation of the house, where water can end up reaching the basement or basement.

A roof examination is always a good idea, especially after a harsh winter. Usually a visual inspection of the roof is all that will be necessary and can be done from ground level. If you see that the shingles are cracked or damaged, you will need to examine this a little more closely. Keep in mind that working on the roof is dangerous and also expensive. If you are going to have any type of roofing work that is necessary, start setting aside some money in the family budget to take care of it as soon as possible.

Those are just a few of the things to do each spring when the snow and ice fall. You should also take a thorough walk around the house and inspect for any visible damage that has occurred. Updating your home during this time and repairing any damage will save you money and time in the future if the problem is allowed to escalate.
