Legal Law

Did you know there are exceptions for auto insurance?

We hear a lot about having car insurance and meeting the minimum requirements, regardless of what state we live in. The minimums may be different and the requirements may be different, but despite that, it is illegal to own a vehicle and not have auto insurance. We figure that any vehicle we own has to be insured. Have you ever thought about what a vehicle is? Okay, it may seem like an obvious question, but what about a motorcycle, scooter, or moped? Do you have to have insurance on those? They are a vehicle that is used to take you from one place to another.

Each state has different laws about what is considered a vehicle and what must be insured, but let’s take a look at car insurance in Washington. Did you know that in the state of Washington there are exceptions to the auto insurance law? Let’s take a look at what some of those exceptions are:

1. “Vintage vehicles” with special license of more than 40 years
2. “Collector vehicles” over 30 years old
3. Publicly owned vehicles. This includes vehicles that are owned, leased, or leased by state, federal, county, county, and town governments. This also includes school districts and political subdivisions.
4. Vehicles registered with the Washington Public Utilities and Transportation Commission as common or contract carriers (any truck that transports for a fee)
5. Motorcycles
6. Mopeds, such as scooters
7. Mopeds

That can be an exciting thought, but it’s important to look at other options to make sure you’re protected no matter what your vehicles are. It is important to always look at the state you live in and what its laws and exceptions are. Every state is different.
