Do you want fun weekends? It’s time to join a softball team!

A few months ago I joined a softball league. I was always “anti-softball” because of the rumors that on every softball field, there was some player “has been”, loaded on steroids, hitting the ball in the parking lot on every pitch. I heard a skit Jim Rome does about “softball guy” and all the fun things “softball guy” does to get ready for a game, play in a game, and compete in tournaments. So they finally convinced me to join a team that my brother and his co-workers put together.

I went to the local softball sporting goods and wanted to get ready for my new weekend adventure. I was very surprised to see how much softball equipment was available to purchase. They had softball bats from about five different companies, different weights and lengths. Some of the bats are not allowed in some leagues, ASA leagues and other different regulations. They had the best turf shoes I’ve ever seen. I never thought they would make softball turf shoes that look so stylish and durable. They were also offering this new style of screen printing called sublimation. They told me that every team in the league is making their uniforms this way, so I had to give my brother an extra twenty-five dollars for the uniforms. I bought a softball bat for the low price of $299, bought some softball shorts and a pair of batting mitts, and was on my way.

Our first weekend of playing this game was worth all the money. We had a beautiful day, we lost the game 4-1 but it was very intense, but very fun. I know before the game and buying softball gear, getting ready, having a barbecue for after was a big test, but I have a new perspective on playing recreational softball.

I hope to be able to write about our tournament very soon. Our team isn’t that good, but we’re going to get better, and with the right softball team we’re sure to compete at everyone’s level.
