How MBA has evolved the path to PGDM and other management courses

We are all mindful when it comes to making the right decision when deciding which course to take during the Masters or Postgraduate phase. India is a developing country with many new startups and companies from time to time. With a progressive business market ahead, students look for various options and prefer to go with the ones that can benefit them career wise.

A few years ago, the only Masters or Postgraduate courses we knew of included MBA, MSC and M.COM along with some short diplomas. People, no matter what stream they major in today, be it arts or commerce, are willing to do their masters in business as it has always been a booming field and lucrative platform to learn and grow as an individual.

MBA is a two-year course where you cover all management topics in the first year and gives you the opportunity to specialize in a certain area in the second year. In India, the main subjects offered when it comes to specialization are Finance, Marketing and Human Resources. At the end of the second year, students are supposed to complete a project analyzing the various aspects in their specific area of ​​expertise. One downside to the MBA course design is that the college or university where students take the course is affiliated with that particular state university. For example, if you are pursuing your MBA in Chennai, the course will be affiliated with the State College (Tamilnadu). There is no authoritative standard uniform regulatory body or standardized pattern for how the course should be designed and structured. Each university has its own way of teaching patterns, taking exams, and marking papers. So this leads to a lot of variance when it comes to the end results, while one university may be really liberal and genuine, the other may be strict and have strict rules.

In order to standardize Indian education so that all the students who pursue them can have the same standard, the council at the national level, the All India Technical Education Council, which is part of higher education, has created a structure of similar course in management as MBA called as “Postgraduate Diploma in Management”. Students often get confused between MBA and PGDM thinking that PGDM is something that is not equivalent to MBA considering it as a kind of Diploma course.

Just so everyone knows, PGDM has higher standards as it is affiliated with the national level council that makes the course self-contained. The course structure and syllabus are designed and approved by AICTE. With this standardized process, all universities must follow its guidelines regarding the way of teaching, the pattern of examinations and the correction of documents.

Our Government of India has started this initiative with the IIM (Indian Institute of Management) whose campuses are spread across different cities in India. Here students are taught and given exposure in different areas related to management. This course fully prepares you to be an entrepreneur and teaches you everything from the beginning. It covers personality development and grooming along with other key topics and projects. Universities also take you on various industry tours to show how things work outside in a company or firm. The national council has endeavored to introduce some new changes even in PGDM by adding different specializations of late, including

• International market
• Information technology
• entrepreneurship management
• operations manager
• banks and finance

So if you have completed your bachelor’s studies and are planning to pursue your master’s degree, we suggest you also think about PGDM. To get admission into one of the PGDM course structures at IIM or any other business school, you need to score well on the national entrance exam like CAT, GMAT or GRE. The standards are set high from the point of admission so you work hard. In this way, the educational system in India has improved, giving way to PGDM courses.
