To Kill a Mockingbird Chapter Summary – Chapter 1

In Chapter 1, Scout Finch, the six-year-old narrator of To Kill a Mockingbird, lives in the 1930s near downtown Maycomb, a small town in Alabama, with her father Atticus, brother Jem, and the cook Calpurnia. . Atticus is a local lawyer in town and is the father of Scout and Jem. Jem is the Scout’s older brother. Calpurnia is the cook at the Finch house who lives near the center. The people of the city of Maycomb are related to each other by marriage or by blood. They are a closely related community.

Introduction:

The story begins in early summer. The character named Scout is only six years old and his brother is ten when they find a skinny boy hiding in their next-door neighbor’s turnips. Dill becomes an instant friend to both Scout and Jem, as he tapped their interest by revealing that he had already seen “Dracula,” giving him immediate credibility. As they spend the summer playing their favorite games together, they get bored and decide to get their lonely neighbor, Boo Radley, out of the house.

Boo Radley’s Conflict, Curiosity, and Fear from Scout, Jem, and Dill:

The supposedly fun goal of trying to get Boo Radley to leave his house became an obsession for all three of them: Dill, Scout and Jem. They focus their creativity and fun skills to get Boo Radley out of the house. Boo lives on the same street where Scout and Jem live. There is a legendary story that Boo never leaves his house and that all the mysterious events, including the smallest crimes in the city, are his doing. No one dares to walk past his house alone after dark. Jem and Dill had an incredibly fun idea. They agreed to run to Boo’s house, touch the house, and then run back. Dill’s first attempt was successful. The characters were happy to be alive. Jem received a lot of teasing from Dill and spent a lot of time thinking about the act.
