Who are the Guatemalan Special Forces?

The Guatemalan special forces, also called Kaibilies, are special operations forces that are a branch of the Guatemalan military. They are distinguished from other troops by their maroon berets. His motto is “If I advance, follow me; if I stop, encourage me; if I go backwards, kill me.”

The Kaibiles, or Kaibil, were formed in 1974 and are named after a leader who avoided capture by Spanish conquistadors. Its headquarters are located in Poptún, Petén.

How to become a member of the Kaibiles

Kaibilies Training

The training for the Kaibiles is unique compared to the training of other special forces. They cannot be more than 28 years old, there are 64 recruits trained at the same time although there have never been more than 10 graduates in any period. It is considered an honor to be selected for this special forces team, although recruitment is voluntary. Those who do not wish to participate do not have to.
