A Guide to Completing Your Pokémon Trading Card Game Deck Online

Pokémon, the video game, originated from a game boy game in which a child was tasked with capturing and tame the 150 different Pokémon. The game revolves around raising and collecting creatures and fighting them against rival Pokémon collectors. Pokemon, the card game, is a derivative of the successful Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS video games.

What is the Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG)?

The Pokémon Trading Card Game is an RPG, similar to the popular “Magic the Gathering” card game. The object of the game is to use your cards (each card is a special Pokémon creature) to defeat the opposing Pokémon trainer (read: player). Some cards have become very valuable due to their effectiveness in the game and their rarity.

What is the difference between a “Starter Deck”, “Themed Deck” and a “Booster Pack”?

The Starter Deck provides an introduction to the card game and provides enough cards for two players. Thematic deck is a single player deck that has more powerful cards (also known as Pokémon) and provides more strategic moves for the player’s deck. A booster pack is a collection of 11 cards that provides an opportunity to obtain rare cards to make the deck more powerful.

Each starter deck is identical where the themed decks have some variety and the booster packs provide powerful collectible cards. Some players will purchase multiple booster decks to find a special rare Pokémon card for their own deck. Each pack has 11 cards consisting of a “rare” or “holofoil” card, 3 “rare cards” and 7 “community cards”.

If you are new to the game, first buy a starter deck and then a themed deck of your liking. Each one contains a rule book to follow to familiarize yourself with the game. Once you’ve mastered the basics, start shopping for booster packs or search for the Pokémon card you want on online auction websites like Ebay.

Is there a “Pokémon Card Price Guide”?

A company called Pojo has a good price guide for Pokémon cards. Here’s a website where you can see the static prices for Pokémon cards. In general, Pokémon cards don’t fluctuate too much in price.
