Boxhead Games Review – Boxhead Games Series Posted by Crazy Monkey Games

The Boxhead Games are a somewhat original series of zombie survival games created, published in flash and available to play for free online on many gaming websites. There are currently 5 games in the series, the latest and most successful being Boxhead The Zombie Wars. They were created by Sean Cooper, published by Crazy Monkey Games and can be classified as third person shooter or zombie survival games.

The first addition, Boxhead A Halloween Special, varies from the rest in relation to the objectives of the game. You must guide the civilians to safety through zombie-infested streets using any means necessary to defend them from carnivorous attacks. Your task is aided by a variety of powerful weapons, the first being a pistol with unlimited ammo and upgrades including an Uzi and shotgun.

The first Boxhead game is quite simple to play and does not provide the player with any sense of urgency or challenge. It’s still pretty fun shooting the slow-moving carnivorous specimens with all manner of weaponry, but I’d recommend playing one of the other, superior sequels.

The second game, Boxhead The Rooms, discards the idea of protecting others and shifts to self-preservation as the main goal. Choosing one of 5 rooms, you must avoid zombie attacks and get rid of them using one of many different means, including powerful weapons like the shotgun, grenades, explosive barrels, and proximity mines.

The second game has been polished very well compared to the first and is much more aesthetically pleasing. New weapons and upgrades are gradually obtained by killing a certain number of zombies. One of the best weapons is the Rocket Launcher, which is extremely powerful, however with power comes great caution and firing it too close can result in a large loss of health.

Although the goal of the game is self-preservation, the real goal is to get a high score. Taking down a zombie gives you 100 points, for every zombie killed in an allotted time afterward, your score increases exponentially. If you fail to kill your next zombie in the given time, your next score will be lower than the most recent. Obviously with more powerful weapons it’s much easier to get a high kill score.

The second game is worth playing, but it can get a bit tedious after a while and this also goes for the third addition to the series: Boxhead More Rooms.

The title says it all; It is the second complete game but with more rooms. There are some additional features besides the new levels, such as difficulty settings, which were not available in the second game.

You can choose between 4 difficulties, Beginner, Intermediate, Expert and Nightmare, and Nightmare is incredibly impossible.

Boxhead 2 Play adds more weaponry, new upgrades, a choice between 4 characters, specific level settings, and more levels. All of this makes up for More Rooms’ poor main bonus feature: multiplayer options.

Although playing against each other or in co-op runs smoothly, there is an extreme lack of level variety and space. Co-op doesn’t even have split-screen, which means both players are left fighting in a static one-screen environment.

Boxhead The Zombie Wars is surprisingly not the best of the bunch, with the 2 game option dropped and the focus shifting to better gameplay, a wider variety of monsters, superior graphics, and improved sound effects.

I recommend playing this addition at most out of 5. It will give you a real idea of how far flash shooting games have come, with flash developers and publishers now designing high quality free flash games that rival paid games.

game verdict

To conclude, The Boxhead Game series offers a twist on the zombie survival genre, but that twist is not enough to make you bow in awe to the creators of the games.

However, the graphics will delight, especially in the final addition and together with great gameplay and sound effects, plus very challenging difficulty levels, Boxhead Zombie Wars will certainly satisfy your thirst for masochistic shooting.
