Guanaja Honduras, Wiener Schnitzel in paradise!

Why does someone go to Guanaja? Where the hell is Guanaja?

Located in Central America off the northern coast of Honduras, this barely developed Bay Island has much to offer. With its clear and pristine Caribbean waters, it is said to have world class bonefishing. If you’re a deep sea fisherman, some of the best migratory fish pass through these waters, so deep it boggles the mind. Lush green mountains dating back to the time when Christopher Columbus first set foot on the island in 1502 and named it the Isles of Pines. This, along with a limitless supply of pure fresh water that cascades down from mountain waterfalls, make it an island paradise. contemplate!

Guanaja is an impressive island. Until now, it has been under the radar of most travelers and people looking for an affordable retirement. It seems that only now is beginning to change a little. Who would have thought that it is home to some of the best wiener schnitzel south of the German border?

A significant German population has arrived in this Central American hideout. There is even a restaurant and bar serving the best of German food. Called Manati, it’s owned by a German guy named Hansito and run by two other Germans, a married couple named Annetta and Klaus. Manatí is the local hangout every Saturday afternoon with Honduran beer and imported German beers being sold together. Various spirits from Europe, used as a digestive aid, are also available for after heavier meals. Gringos from all over Guanaja come to see what Annetta and Klaus have prepared in their little kitchen and no one leaves disappointed.

Annetta has a connection to a butcher who sends her the special meats and sausages she needs from the mainland… the mainland of Honduras, that is! Who would have thought that you could get authentic German food in the wilds of the Bay Islands?

On the Saturday afternoon that we visited, the wiener schnitzel was on the menu. As we walked up the steps to the restaurant, we could hear the banging and banging coming from the kitchen as Klaus tenderized the pork to the point where it could be cut with a fork. The schnitzel, coated in a mixture of flour and egg, is fried in butter and is really delicious. Served with authentic German potato salad and locally prepared sauerkraut, my Austrian husband was almost in tears with joy! I say “almost”, because who in his right mind would choose to be in Germany, freezing his hindquarters, when he could live economically in the paradise of Guanaja?

Everyone has their own idea of paradise. Some people love snow and mountains, while others believe that the gentle breezes of a tropical island are the way to go. Some say tomato, others TOMATO. Jimmy Buffet sings about a cheeseburger in paradise, but for my money, I’ll have a wiener schnitzel in paradise any day!
