Is it offensive for non-Scots to wear kilts?

Kilts are associated with Scottish and Irish heritage and have a long tradition as part of Celtic culture. For Irish and Scottish gentlemen, kilts can be a way of showing pride in their nationalities, and that leads to an important question: is it offensive for non-Scots to wear a kilt?

Unfortunately, there is no single answer. To determine if this is a good idea or not, consider the following:

– The style of the Scottish skirt.

The plaid patterns on kilts are often associated with heraldry. Scottish and Irish families often have a tartan pattern that is considered their own. If someone from one of those families saw you in their tartan, they might take offense, especially if you’re a stranger and not Scottish or Irish. It is also generally considered poor taste to wear a military kilt or kilt if you are not a service member or veteran or to wear an organization’s tartan if you are not a member. If you want to stay away from tartans altogether, there are still plenty of other types of kilts you can choose from. Contemporary, utilitarian, and hybrid kilts are great options for non-Scottish men.

– The occasion.

Whether you’re at a highland game, a Celtic or Scottish festival, or a wedding where the gentlemen will be wearing kilts, you can easily rock it without offending anyone; however, if you are attending a Halloween party or fancy dress party, someone who is Scottish might find wearing a kilt as a costume offensive and disrespectful of their heritage. Wearing a kilt every day to work or to a club will not usually be construed as offensive.

– The context.

Although you are unlikely to offend anyone by wearing a kilt that is not associated with heraldry, military service, or an organization, your behavior in a kilt could be offensive, and not just to the Scots. Make sure to remember to keep your legs closed when wearing a kilt and to be modest. That rule also applies to the Scots!

– How do you use it?

Another important thing to consider when planning to wear a kilt and it’s not Scottish is the fit. A kilt that doesn’t fit you well and is too short and tight or too baggy or sloppy can make it seem like you’re making fun of the Scots. That is why it is better to choose a kilt that suits you well. Better yet, have a kilt specially made to your specifications, so you’re guaranteed to look your best in it.
