The adventurous side of Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico offers some of the best adventure sports in the world. There is something for every type of adventure lover, from the newcomer to the more experienced. These are some of the activities you can enjoy.

Backcountry hiking is quite popular in this terrain and by far the best place to start is El Yunque Caribbean National Forest. You will have to go through the paved trails of the Recreation Center and then continue walking along the El Toro Trail. This trail passes through Tabonuco, Sierra Palm, as well as several cloud forests and gives you a brilliant view of the south coast. This trail then connects with the trade winds trail and returns to the El Yunque Recreation Center.

Another activity offered here is remembering. You can do this in all possible ways in the San Cristóbal Canyon, which is one of the largest canyons in the Caribbean. It is situated in the middle of Aibonito and Barranquitas and is in the Cordillera Central. It would be better for you to hire tour operators based in San Cristobal Hiking Tour and Acampa, who will be able to provide you with expert guidance on the trail. It is dense with vegetation and the canyon itself is 4.5 miles long and drops 500-800 feet. Your mountain climbing skills will be put to the test.

Caving is another activity for which Puerto Rico is famous. After all, it is the country with the third largest underground river cave system in the world. If you want a mild version of this, you will have to visit Las Cavernas del Río Camuy which is located on the north coast. This is where you can explore Cueva Clara. You’ll find a room filled with 170-foot-tall stalagmites and stalactites, as well as an underwater waterfall. You can also test your remembering skills here.

Wilderness Camping can be really adventurous. How about taking an overnight boat ride through the stormy waters of Mona Passage and then camping on the uninhabited island of Mona? This is a subtropical island that has a 20-mile coastline and is mostly filled with vertical cliffs that are no higher than 200 feet. Along the hiking trail you will come across wild boars, goats and even the Mona Iguana. This creature can grow up to four feet. Snorkeling and diving can be done with rented equipment here.

You can also enjoy scuba diving and kitesurfing in various places in Puerto Rico.
