The excitement of learning a new sport or activity

For those of you who exercise regularly to get fit depending on how long it’s been going on, you may have found yourself craving a new activity to add to your repertoire of exercises.

Who can blame you, working out at the gym or running around your neighborhood day after day can get pretty monotonous. The last thing you want is a feeling of annoyance or boredom to creep in, as it can worsen and cause you to completely abandon your healthy routine.

One of the best ways to keep your exercise commitment on full steam is to diversify your activities. When you have 3-4 different exercises, activities or sports, not only will your mind enjoy the change in routine, but your body, more particularly your muscles, will be receiving a different workout. That is why it can be exciting to learn a new sport or activity.

Sure, running around the neighborhood is a healthy activity, but what about the muscles in your arms, chest, or back? They also want a little attention. Think of it this way too, do you just want to have strong legs but stuck with flabby arms or an underdeveloped back and shoulders?

Just one more reason why it helps to have a variety of workouts and sports at your disposal. Different activities exercise different muscle groups. For example, running for the most part exercises your legs in one direction (forward) but playing an organized game of basketball you also run but in a variety of directions: forward, backward, side to side. Along with that, you do a lot of squats and jumps, so playing basketball correctly gives your legs a more complete workout.

However, herein lies the problem. Most of us don’t like change. Let’s face it, change can be awkward. This is especially true if we are going to change learning a new sport.

Overcoming the hurdle of being a beginner or a newbie can be the frustrating part. However, once the learning curve is over, you will fully master a new activity and now you will have another delicious exercise that you can engage in on a regular basis.

If you are really interested in learning a new sport or activity, the first thing to do is seek the proper instruction from a qualified teacher. It is important to learn the correct form and technique from someone who is a professional, or at least someone who has enough experience to provide the proper guidance and direction.

Put the internet to work for you. Websites like Groupon, LivingSocial, Meetup, and even Craigslist have a host of outdoor activities, classes, and sports at decent prices. You can always bring a friend with you the first time so that you feel more comfortable with the new experience.

Just keep in mind the sport or activity you choose to learn, how will you be able to continue after the instruction is over? Is it a team activity like basketball or soccer? With these sports, once you learn how to play, you will likely need to join a league where you will have regular games at a certain time.

This is unlike something independent like surfing, golf, or skating. These sports / activities can be done by yourself without the need for additional people to complete. Make sure to keep this in mind when planning what sport or activity you want to learn, as it can make a difference in the world.
